Will's Wills

Austin violinist Will Taylor and his Strings Attached collective have made a considerable mark with collaboration and tribute shows. A first-class player, Taylor has, for more than a decade, recruited other first-call players to add string arrangements behind roots artists including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Patrice Pike, Guy Forsyth and Ruthie Foster. Taylor & Strings Attached also do shows featuring the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and others. The result is inspired, entertaining concerts.

The latest from Taylor & Strings Attached is “House of Wills,” a CD and touring show that finds the band, fronted by singers Karen Mal begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting and Steve Carter, presenting songs, most from the Willie Nelson book, arranged a la Western swing champ Bob Wills. Taylor and company mix classics such as “Hello Walls,” “On the Road Again” and “Crazy” with “Home Motel,” “I Guess I've Come to Live Here in Your Eyes” and “Looking for a Place to Fall Apart.”

The result is a compelling CD that promises to translate to a compelling, fun live show. Will Taylor & Strings Attached will bring “House of Wills” to San Antone Café & Concerts on Friday at 9 p.m. Cover charge is $15. Young & Restless work the Café at 6.

Will Taylor and his strings step outside their comfort zone and into what they dub the House of Wills, interpreting the songs of Willie Nelson in the style of Bob Wills. As with all of Taylor's projects, the musicianship is top-notch and the spare arrangements are superb. . . .

Kerrville fest 'family' honors its own
At the Kerrville Folk Festival, newcomers and veteran performers share the spotlight and absent friends are remembered.

Every five years, the festival closes with a memorial concert. This year, the 40th edition of the storied festival, is a memorial year.

“It's a way to celebrate the lives of all the people we've lost,” said festival producer Dalis Allen. “This year we've lost a lot, including Jack Hardy and Rusty Wier, both of whom were longtime members of the Kerrville family. Because this is such a family place, so many people come every year. They might not see each other all year, but they come back to this family.”
